Modern update of Will Crowther's ground-breaking text-adventure to launch on PC, consoles and VR devices on January 19th
Excitement was in the air for adventure fans at The Game Awards 2022, as Ken and Roberta Williams revealed the launch date for Colossal Cave – Reimagined by Roberta Williams, the much-anticipated reimagining of the classic 1976 text-based game that started the whole genre. So mark your calendars for January 19th!
The new version of this classic game has been designed from the ground up to provide an enhanced and immersive gaming experience. At long last we’ll have the ability to experience the adventure with our own eyes, as “unfathomable wonders await for those seeking true adventure in a winding labyrinth of underground caves.” Deep in the subterranean corridors, “storybook beasts materialize as living creatures, ready to become life-long friends or foes.” There will be plenty of items to find and complex puzzles to solve throughout the “massive caverns embedded with perilous dangers and exceptional treasures.”
The original Colossal Cave Adventure by Will Crowther was an inspiration to Ken and Roberta in launching their own legendary adventure game company, On-Line Systems (later Sierra On-Line), Now they're determined to do the modern reinterpretation of the game justice with their new studio, Cygnus Entertainment, stating that “we’ve built this world with all of the love and wonder of the first game, and hope the next generation of gamers can experience the same magical touch it had on our lives.” The new release will feature modern 3D graphics and updated puzzles, all set in an environment based on two real-life caving systems: Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, and Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico.
Will Colossal Cave live up to the massive expectations that a new game from Ken and Roberta Williams naturally creates? We will find out on January 19th when the game is launched for Windows PC and Mac via Steam, the Epic Games Store, Humble, Itch.io and Amazon, along with console versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and even a VR version for Meta Quest 2.
