Sequel to acclaimed 2014 WWI side-scroller to launch exclusively on Netflix mobile app in early 2023
The good news for fans of Ubisoft Montpellier's acclaimed 2014 WWI side-scroller Valiant Hearts: The Great War is that a sequel is on the way for early 2023, subtitled Coming Home. If not necessarily the bad news, the catch is that you'll need to be a Netflix subscriber to play it.
The original game saw players control four different characters living through the horrors of the First World War in separate yet interconnecting ways. The sequel follows a similar formula, once starring four playable protagonists on the Western Front in an all-new story "about friendship, survival, and sacrifice as they deal with the overwhelming impact of war." Returning is the young Red Cross nurse named Anna, joined this time by a civilian German diver named Ernst, who must struggle to maintain his humanity as he's "caught up in the crossfire" between the two sides, and a British aviator name George, who surveils the carnage from the skies. Meanwhile, eager to prove his worth in the trenches, young James joins the Harlem Hellfighters, the "first African-American infantry unit to fight in World War I," where he hopes to reunite with his "heroic" older brother Freddie.
The sequel is being developed by the "original core team," in collaboration with Old Skull Games. As with its predecessor, Coming Home will be a side-scrolling adventure with a stylish hand-drawn graphic novel aesthetic that somewhat belies the brutal nature of its subject matter. And as before, the genre-bending gameplay will once again combine a mix of "exploration, puzzles, and action" while the chaos of war rages cinematically around you. Fortunately you won't be alone, as your "faithful canine companion" Walt also returns to "help players solve puzzles."
What's unique about the launch of Valiant Hearts: Coming Home is that it will be available exclusively for Netflix members on the streaming service's mobile app for smartphones and tablets, representing the first of three mobile games that Ubisoft and Netflix will be launching in 2023. There is no firm target release date just yet, but it's not far off as it's due to arrive sometime early in the new year.
