Upcoming new narrative horror adventure unveiled from the creators of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
When a malicious supernatural entity strikes, perhaps the last place you'd want to be is trapped on an offshore oil rig cut off from the rest of civiliation with nowhere to run. Unless, of course, you like to scare yourself silly, in which case you'll be thrilled to learn of the upcoming new horror adventure Still Wakes the Deep from The Chinese Room.
Players step into the first-person work boots of an oil rig worker on the Beira D in 1975 off the coast of Scotland. The remote location and inclement weather are challenging enough, as you must fight for your life through "a vicious storm, perilous surroundings, and the dark, freezing North Sea waters." But that's the least of your worries when an "otherworldly horror on the edge of all logic and reality" boards the rig and begins terrorizing the crew. With all lines of communication cut off and all exits destroyed, it's up to you to search for survivors and rescue anyone you can as you "run, climb, and swim through the flooding corridors and storm-lashed outer decks," all while trying to elude the "terrifying, unrelenting foe" that continues to stalk the battered water-bound structure.
The Chinese Room has developed a sterling reputation for narrative- and exploration-driven games like Dear Esther and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, while branching out more recently with the side-scrolling puzzle-platformer Little Orpheus. Still Wakes the Deep, however, shares more in common with the UK developer's 2013 pseudo-sequel horror adventure Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. Like in that game, players will find themselves struggling to survive with no means to fight back or defend yourself, just your "wits and determination" in a deadly scenario where "one wrong step could be your last." The Beira D's crew will be voiced by an "authentic cast of Scottish actors," and the Unreal Engine 5 allows for skin-crawling realism amidst a story that promises "a symphony of action, trepidation, tender emotions, and awe."
No target release date has been announced yet, but Still Wakes the Deep will launch in 2024 on Steam and Epic for Windows PC, along with console versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game will also be included on Game Pass for PC and Xbox.
