In his latest video, Adventure Game Geek, delves into Dragon Lore: The Legend Begins, released in 1994 by Cryo Interactive. But this time he’s not alone! He’s joined by The Rural Adventurer, who suggested collaborating on this in the first place. Turns out his motives weren’t entirely honourable though, and secretly thought it would be funny to watch the Geek suffer…. Well, his plan didn’t quite work out, and he was disturbed to find that AGG not only took him up on his offer, but took great pleasure in going on a rampage and killing everything in his path.

The story starts on a farm (with one cow called Daisy and two giant dog creatures), and we find out one day that we’re not the simple farmboy we thought we were. We’re actually Werner von Wallenrod, the heir to Castle von Wallenrod, so with this revelation we set out on a quest to get to the castle and prove ourselves worthy to become a Dragon Knight. We’ll meet other Dragon Knights on the way who’ll judge our actions before casting their votes at the end (if we ever get there). Their votes are based on whether we take the path of wisdom or violence. The Rural Adventurer chose the path of wisdom, but AGG got tired of being a little goody two shoes all the time and turned to violence, killing all the Dragon Knights and any poor defenseless creatures he came across. He still became a Dragon Knight in the end, but he enjoyed himself a whole lot more!

Dragon Lore is a very cryptic game, and even simple tasks like using an item or casting a spell can be tricky. The combat system is a puzzle itself, one that doesn’t really have a solution except clicking blindly at the enemy until they either go down or send you hurtling into the eternal void. If you’re serious about getting the most out of this game, you should definitely get your hands on a copy of the strategy guide, which contains a fictional walkthrough that’s invaluable for gaining insight into what your character’s thinking. Otherwise you might think he’s not thinking much at all. And if you’re interested in continuing the von Wallenrod saga, there’s also Dragon Lore II: The Heart of the Dragon Man, which is available on the Zoom Platform.
